I do a lot of different type of
development
sometimes I build websites other times I
build visual studio extensions and other
times yet I build Windows apps and I use
different extensions I do I use
different window layouts and depending
on which of these type of applications I
build so would be kind of cool if there
was a way that I could customize visual
studio for each of these different
scenarios or application types that I
built well what if I said that there was
a way to do that and it's a feature
called rude suffix it allows us to start
a visual studio in a way that it uses
its own copy of its internal registry if
I don't synchronize settings it can have
its own theme make it as its own habits
on Windows layout and all these
different things that sets it apart from
the regular instance of visual studio so
let's take a look at how we do that so
here I have a visual studio it's sort of
my general purpose thing this is what I
use this is my typical layout for any
type of tab that I built now let's say I
want to create something for when I
build visuals to do extensions that I
want for that particular version of
visual studio I want different types of
extensions installed so let's go to the
developer command prompt and type dev
end and then slash root suffix space and
then any name I can think of ext4
extension that's something I can
remember so let's execute that and it
stars visual studio up and you can see
I've already used this root suffix
before and so you can see it looks
different and if we look down at the
taskbar here we can see it is the same
version of Visual Studio right there
they're side-by-side but they have
different window layout and they have
two
front toolbars visible and also if we
look at the extensions that are
installed we can see here here's one set
of extensions for that I have
specifically for extension development
and if we go over to the other one we
can see that it is a different set of
extensions that are here for this
particular instance so it's the same
version of visual studio but using the
root suffix switch command line switch I
can separate them out just remember if
you want to if you want to keep theming
and other things separate from each of
these instances disable the
synchronization of settings otherwise
once you're signed into Visual Studio it
will synchronize settings across all
your different route suffixes and so on
so that is one very easy way to
differentiate the different workloads
and have Visual Studio customized for
each of them thanks for watching
